Visual element of Graphic Design: Space

Space creates the visual essence and dynamic of a composition. In design there are two types of space: Positive space and negative space.

Positive space can be perceived as two dimensional or three-dimensional. Positive space refers to the shapes of objects. It usually refers to anything that is considered the main focus of the page.

Negative space is the white space or empty space which is the part of the design that is not there, the space between the visual elements. This can also be the background colour of a design. Negative space can be just as integral to the design as the positive space.

Negative space is important because it helps frame and contain a composition. Negative space connects or disconnects shapes to suggest relationships between shapes. Negative space avoids visual clutter and looks clean which can help balance a composition and help focus the viewer on something specific.

In design what creates positive and negative space is the arrangement and visual appearance…

Visual element of Graphic Design: Texture

Texture is the way the surface feels or is perceived to feel. Texture is used to create a visual tone and can influence the look and feel of a piece of graphic design work.

Texture is used to attract or repel interest to an element depending on the pleasantness of the texture. Now in design there are two types of texture: Image texture, and Pattern texture.

Image texture
Image texture is generated from a combination of organic or geometric shapes and colour. Image texture can be simple or complex and generally appears random to create a particular look and feel Image texture tantalises the senses, the eye likes to look at image texture.

Image texture can be like the sense of smell and touch, you can't see anything in particular in it but overall it triggers feelings of emotions and sensations of touch. Now image texture can be:

Environmental, Environmental texture can be wood, grain, sand, water, stone to the stars in the sky.Biological, Biological texture can be skin, fur, feather…

Visual element of Graphic Design: Shape

Everything is ultimately a shape. All objects are composed of shapes and all visual elements are shapes in some way. In design shapes have two dimensions and are measured by their height and width.

Shapes are defined by boundaries such as with lines or colour and can also be created with negative space. Shapes are used to add interest and substance to a piece of graphic design work, they can be used to decorate they can be symbolic and can be used to create patterns and textures.

Now there are two types of shape: Geometric and organic. Geometric shapes are the shapes that can be drawn using a ruler or compass. Weather simple or complex these produce a feeling of control or order. Organic shapes, are shapes that can be drawn free hand or shapes found in nature.

Organic shapes weather simple or complex produce a natural feel. Now it's important to keep in mind that shapes our signal visual elements.

In design when we begin to place shapes together we create a relationship between th…
